How To Create A Cozy Winter Home After The Holidays

Our Minnesota winters last far beyond the holiday season and it just seems odd to bring tulips into our home in January. So, I take the Christmas red out of our decor for a break from color, and keep snowflakes, mini pines and warm neutral colors for a cozy winter feel.
Our kitchen dining nook in warm neutrals.

One of the things I love about the main floor of our home is the neutral wall color, (more on colors later). The whole main floor is painted in shades of warm cement grays which make it so easy to accent with any color I choose, and since I love to decorate by the seasons and also thrive on changing up our decor, a neutral backdrop was a must for me.

With all of the wood elements and no carpeting in our home, I like to bring in cozy accents and texture to create warmth like this Avery Throw by Serena and Lily. It makes a soft seat for a guest or a quick wrap if someone gets a chill. (Here's to you, Mom. Wink Wink) Between you and me, she always gets chilly so having a throw close by makes her feel taken comfortable and I want my guests to always be comfortable in our home. I also like to add soft accent rugs and plan to look for a new rug to go under the table since we moved the one we had here over to the cottage. (More on that to come). So, for now it's accent rugs.

Winter Grays in the dining room, lots of texture and interest.
The next layering piece I like to use for texture and a bit of life is greenery. Now since it's still bitterly cold here in the Midwest I like to use my left over pines from Christmas, just making sure to keep them natural and not decorated like a Christmas Tree. The mini pines I show here are from Michaels Crafts and I really like these because they have a touch of snow on the tips and are wrapped in a weighted burlap so they don't tip over easily. They are on super clearance after the holidays so I always stock up for next year too. These little pines are so versatile and I seem to add more every year. They can cover up unsightly areas like floor vents, fill in on mantels, and just add depth to any styling, like shown above.

Well, I hope you got a few tips today and hope you'll stop back for more home decorating inspiration!
